An Afternoon at Georgetown, SC
Earlier this week we decided to take a drive to the Georgetown area which is about 20 miles from Surfside Beach. It was a sunny day with little wind so it was a nice afternoon for a walk along the marina.
My sister and brother-in-law are visiting, and being sailors, they were interested in looking at the sail boats in the marina and having a chat with a local sailor.
This was one of the larger boats at the marina. It was very impressive.

We stopped into the River Room Restaurant to see their menu for another time, and took a few minutes to enjoy their aquarium. The fish were quite colourful and the coral very unique. Since red is my favourite colour, the little red fish was most interesting to me.

There is a very nice fish market in Georgetown so we stopped there to buy a couple of pounds of fresh shrimp. When we got home, our brother-in-law made this awesome pasta for our dinner.
Yes, it was as delicious as it looks!

Morris Island Shelling Trip
This week Paul and I took a shelling day trip with the local shelling club, of which we are members during our time in Surfside Beach.
We took our boat from Shems Creek to Morris island, near Charleston Harbour. As we left Shems Creek we could see all the shrimp fishing boats.
It was an uneventful ride of about 20 minutes to Morris island. The morning was a little overcast but turned into a beautiful sunny day.
Irm and I strolled along the beach looking for treasures. Large trees, at some time, had washed up on the beach. They were like amazing pieces of artwork.
It was a beautiful day to stroll all this beach.
Well, Paul was the envy of the shelling trip after finding this extremely large shark tooth. He has just started to collect sharks teeth and to find this one certainly made his day worthwhile. He found several others but this one was worthy of a photo!
There were lots of starfish on the beach as well as other shells.
After a good day of shelling, it is always nice to take a rest near the dunes and enjoy a picnic lunch. Irm shared her delicious cookies with me.
From Morris Island we were able to enjoy several nice views:
- Charleston Bridge, SC
All the shellers waiting for Captain Chris and his boat to return to Morris Island to pick us up. Karen, the organiser of our trips, had quite a successful day by the look of her wagon.
I must admit that I am not the bravest when it comes to travel on the water. So after being on loppy water in the small boat with 12 other people for 30 minutes, I was happy to get my feet on land again.

We travelled again this year with Captain Chris. It was a rather small open boat with 12 anxious shellers aboard.

Here we are, Irm and I, two happy shellers with all our treasures. I found several Tun Shells which were considered a good find by the experienced shellers. I will post a photo in a later blog.

Snippets of Our Day
We started our day with a hot breakfast on our deck enjoying the warmth of the sun, being sheltered from the wind, and watching for dolphins. We were fortunate to see a few swim by.
Paul enjoys watching the pelicans fly over.

On our walk we found another area to watch Northern Cardinals. This is such a pleasure for us as we do not see them at home.

We were very fortunate to discover this owl in one of the trees.
We decided to finish our walk on the beach. There were lots of shore birds to watch, along with an interesting brown bird.
Watching the waves near the pier is always fun.

Points of Interest
On our off-the-beach walk yesterday, we found several points of interest - well, interesting to us at least.
Just across the street from our condo, we discovered a wooded area that seems to have Northern Cardinals nesting there. We don't get Northern Cardinals in the area where we live, so this is a great find for us. I took a photo of these female Northern Cardinals and when I downloaded it, discovered there were three of them - I didn't notice the one in the background at the time.
Also when taking this female Northern Cardinal in the hedge, I didn't notice the male Cardinal (to the right) until I downloaded this photo - bonus! I think I need to be more observant.
This is one of my favourite houses on the beach. I just love the style and colour.
These feathery grasses are very common here in this area of South Carolina. I just love to watch them blow in the wind.
Most of the beach houses here have a name plate. I thought Recovery Zone was quite fitting. You can surely recover from most things here at the beach, or at least relax and try. Another name plate that I saw, but didn't photo, was Vitamin Sea.
Another day in our simple life.
