Start of Travels on the South Shore, Nova Scotia

On our drive from Halifax to Chester Basin, these are some of the sights we enjoyed on our coastal drive on the Bluenose Coast.

A perfect place to live

A painting on a fish shack at the Hubbards wharf area

Near Chester we found this interesting stonework (wall and the sheep) in the garden of a local artist.  The tree in the background is made of driftwood.

A closer look at the driftwood tree.

It's been 15 years since Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off
Nova Scotia, killing all people on board.  On September 2, 1998, Nova Scotians
near the coast felt their homes tremble as the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 plane
bound for Geneva, Switzerland crashed into the water a few kilometers off the
shore of Peggy's Cove, which is just across the water from the South Shore.

We visited this Monument showing the names (229) of all those who died.

The Seaside Shanty Restaurant
Don't let looks deceive you.  They serve a wonderful chowder and delicious fish cakes. The Blueberry Grunt dessert was "wow"!  We will definitely dine here again.

More to come of the South Shore of Nova Scotia...

Rita's Tea Room, Nova Scotia

Paul and I made a delightful stop in Big Pond, Nova Scotia to enjoy Rita's Tea Room.  It was also an emotional visit, as Cape Breton singer Rita MacNeil passed away on 16 April of this year.  Rita will be missed by all her fans.

I enjoyed looking up at all the tea cups decorating the Tea Room.
The centre tea cup has a "Lily of the Valley" design, which is the birth flower of the month of May.  My birthday is 28 May, and it was also the birthday of Rita MacNeil.

Memorabilia displayed in the Tea Room

I remember Rita wearing her red hat during one of her concerts I attended some years ago.

Photos of Rita and friends over the years

I enjoyed this wonderful meal of
quiche and a spinach salad with maple dressing.
It was the most decadent quiche I've ever eaten.

Paul opted for the seafood chowder.
On a scale of 1 to 10, he rated it an "11"!
There has been no other like it for him since...

Rita MacNeil was:
"A great Canadian performer and icon."

A Special Evening

On 7 February 2003, Paul and I met for the first time.  That was 10 years ago this week.

On 7 February 2013, our friends John and Jackie treated us to a lovely evening at Lil Tokyo Steakhouse & Sushi Bar Hibachi Restaurant here in Myrtle Beach.

It was very nice to share this evening with friends, over a good meal and drinks.

Paul & I enjoying a little Sake.
(Thanks for sharing Jackie.)

This was the first time that Paul and I visited this restaurant and we would be happy to return.  Thanks again to John and Jackie for their kind invitation.

A Fowler Dining Experience

The Fowler Dining Room at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Conway is a dining experience that we love.  Last week Paul and I were joined by our friends for another wonderful gourmet meal.

Ice tea, a favourite beverage with a meal here in the South

First Course
Pork Provencal over Mashed Cauliflower Puree

Second Course
Philadelphia Pepperpot

Third Course
Tomato & Asparagus Salad with Fresh Mozzarella

Main Course 1
Lamb Navarin with Sausage Tomato Salsa

Main Course 2
Teriyaki Salmon with Mango Salsa

I am enjoying the Lamb main course as Paul is not a
fan of lamb, so he enjoyed the Salmon meal.
(When the main courses are meals that we both like,
we share the courses.)

Dessert
Banana French Toast with Sweet Sauce & Cream

We are all smiling after the most fabulous meal.
Paul and I thought it was surely the best dining experience ever for us!

I forgot to mention that Blueberry Streusel Muffins were also served with
the main course.  I had mine "to go" as my tummy was just too full.

We feel fortunate any time we are able to obtain a reservation at the Fowler Dining Room.  Because of the popularity, reservations are becoming more difficult to obtain.  Where else could you enjoy such a gourmet dining experience for only $12.50 per person?
