Father's Day

Although Paul's son and daughter were not here to celebrate Father's Day with him, he did enjoy their telephone calls.  He started his day in his favourite place, our back deck, enjoying the view.

Paul requested his favourite breakfast so I cooked him a veggie and cheese omelette.

In the afternoon we visited with his sister and family and took a drive downshore along the coastal road to Salmon Beach.  Then it was back home for a surf and turf supper.

It was a great Father's Day for a special man.

Downshore Today

For Paul and I there is no better way to spend a nice sunny afternoon than downshore on our favourite beach.  Today we saw the local lobster boats on the water pulling their traps.

Of course if we are downshore, we are combing the beach for treasures.

We had another afternoon of great finds.  I still have to sort mine a little to weed out some of the less perfect pieces.

Paul has even inserted a Toonie with his collection so you are able to see the size by scale.  Between us we found 70 blue mermaid tears.  At one time we would be happy to find a couple of pieces of blue but now we are getting spoiled with all these finds.

A few of my great finds today are:  several pieces of pottery, one piece of light grey, one piece of mauve, sea foam greens and a piece of what is referred to as "black" glass which is actually a very dark green.

Another great day in our simple life.

Lobster Season

Earlier this week, Paul and I took a drive downshore to our favorite beach.  The local fishermen were busy preparing their lobster traps for the upcoming season (1 May in our area).

We will be at our local fish market on 1 May to buy fresh lobster.

What's for supper?

We have been cooking on the barbecue quite a bit lately and we wanted a change for supper this evening so I decided I would make lobster rolls. We made a trip to our local fish market and purchased a tub of lobster meat. This makes the process easier as I don't have to shell lobsters and we get more meat per pound for our money - which means larger lobster rolls!

There are two size meals in our house:

- the gal meal; and

- the guy meal!

Delicious.

Recipe for Lobster Rolls (makes 3 to 4)

1 pound lobster, cut into small pieces
1 large celery stick, finely chopped
1 green onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup light mayo, (or to taste)
a squeeze of fresh lemon
salt and pepper, to taste
lettuce, optional
hot dog size rolls

In bowl, mix first 7 ingredients together.

Lightly butter outer sides of rolls and place in a non-stick fry pan to toast, turning side to side, as necessary.

Spoon mixture into hot, toasted rolls. Serve with potato salad or homemade oven fries.

Bay of Chaleur

I took this photo from our back deck this morning. At the end of our back yard and across the marsh we are able to see the boats in the Bay of Chaleur, near Beresford Beach.

I hope this boat has a fresh catch of lobster aboard as we are making a trip to the local fish market this afternoon. I'm making lobster rolls for our evening meal.

Lobster Season in New Brunswick

Last week Paul and I spent the afternoon on one of our favourite beaches enjoying the sound of the waves and looking for treasures.

The first of May is the opening of the lobster fishing season in northern New Brunswick. At the wharf at Stonehaven there were lots of lobster pots, both the new style (wire) and the old style (wooden).

We chatted with a couple of the local fishermen who are still fishing, even though they are well over the age of 70. They say there is no experience like being on the water at sunrise.

The fishing boats were all tied up at the wharf awaiting the first day of lobster fishing.

Well, the first catch of the season was successful and our table is set for a feast. We like a simple menu of potato salad, fresh bread, wine, beer and of course - big, juicy lobsters.

I can't think of anything that tastes as yummy as the first lobsters of the season. What a great meal it was...
