Birthday Celebrations
February 17 was Paul's birthday, and we celebrated again this year at Surfside Beach. His day started a little cooler than expected with a dusting of snow! Yes, here is our condo window in our hallway.
We enjoyed a great meal at the Rioz Brazilian Steakhouse with friends - an once-a-year experience as there is so much food to try (LtoR: Maddy, Don, Irm, Me, Paul and Bill)
The Birthday guy's tummy was too full to eat more than the words "Happy Birthday" so we took his treat home
We served Birthday cake and coffee at our condo for friends (only one candle on Paul's cake as we did not want to start a fire with the other 60!)

South Strand Chapter of AAAA
Last week Paul and I attended our second Monthly Meeting of the South Strand Chapter of American Antique Arts Association here in Surfside Beach, S.C. and became "snowbird" members. We thought it would be an interesting way to learn more of the history of the area, and the United States in general.
The meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month in the Meeting Room of the Tupelo Bay Golf Club.

The speaker this month was our friend, Don Cate. His presentation was on the Evolution of Pottery South of the Mason/Dixon Line. Don is a member of the Southern Pottery Collector's Society and he has been collecting southern pottery for over 30 years. He discussed the origins of pottery in the South, starting with Edgefield, SC and tracing its development from functional to decorative and collectible. He covered activity and potters in South and North Carolina, as well as Virginia and Alabama.

Paul and I found the presentation on the pottery most interesting. We certainly learned some history of many of the potters, their movement through the country and identification markings of their work.
It is always nice to learn about new things.

The Market Common
Yesterday afternoon Paul and I went to The Market Common area for a walk, where we saw this new development going up. We decided to walk about to look at all the cute houses, and there was an Open House taking place so we toured a couple. The area is called Sweetgrass Square. Sweetgrass is the grass used by the local weavers to make the sweetgrass baskets which are very well known here in the lowcountry. (I recently read "Sweetgrass" by Mary Alice Monroe which talks of the history of sweetgrass and the art of the basket making.)
The blue one on the right reminded me of my house on Monchy Road in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. (I had more of a garden area thank goodness.)
We toured this one with a couple from Massachusetts. There was very little living space but the large upper balcony off the master bedroom was nice.

Myrtle Beach Boardwalk
Although it was a little windy, Paul and I thought Elaine might like to take a walk on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk on the strip. The walk goes from 2nd Avenue Pier to 14th Avenue Pier. We stopped to admire those people brave enough to ride the The Skywheel - not for us...
We walked along to 14th Avenue Pier and on our return walk, Elaine and I popped into The Gay Dolphin, which is said to be the largest gift shop on the East Coast. Elaine and I thought it the most confusing gift shop with all the different levels. There was a guy making roses from palm leaves on the boardwalk so Elaine and I bought one.

This is a view of Myrtle Beach looking north. There are more than 60 miles of walkable beach on The Grand Strand.
Here we are, the two beach bunnies...
When we finished on the boardwalk, we went out onto 2nd Avenue Pier to enjoy the views.

Yes, here we are - Elaine and I after our walk - roses, shopping bag and the Boardwalk sign.
Another great afternoon.
